Holistic Health: Nutrition for Crohn’s Disease

20131002-121609.jpgA friend of mine has Crohn’s Disease and wanted to know what she should eat and what she should avoid.

Crohn’s is a form of Irritable Bowel Syndrome so the following diet is gentle on your digestive system and will boost your immune system.

Important tips for dealing with Crohns:

•Low fat

•low fiber

•Lots of protein

•more vitamins

•Small meals

•Drink plenty of water

•No smoking: greatly irritates your system.

Smoking increases your risk of developing Crohn’s disease, and once you have it, smoking can make the condition worse. People with Crohn’s disease who smoke are more likely to have relapses, need medications and repeat surgeries. Quitting smoking can improve the overall health of your digestive tract, as well as provide many other health benefits.

Avoid common allergens:
•Wheat, gluten, and yeast

•Avoid sweets, alcohol, coffee, and cold drinks

•Limit dairy (use lactaid to help body digest milk enzymes)

Add to your diet:
•Fish oil from salmon and sardines

•Eat a little fresh fruit (especially apples, pears and kiwi)

kiwi has more vitamin c than oranges!

•Unsweetened applesauce


•Cooked carrots

•Potatoes (without their skin) ((good source of potassium))

•Cereals that are low in fiber (corn flakes, Rice Krispies)

If you can handle dairy:

Ensure or other liquid meals with lots of nutrients can help

Yogurt with probiotics or Kefir

Also, Swiss and cheddar cheeses will be easier for your body to digest

Spices to Add:
Turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, rosemary, oregano

Make Sure to Drink:
•peppermint tea

•Pomegranate juice


•Lots of water

•NEED B vitamins

•Vitamin D (3,000-4,000 IU)

•cod liver oil: 2 teaspoons has vitamin D to help your body absorb calcium

•probiotics (50+billion)


•Coenzyme Q10

•Omega 3s


Marshmallow root, slippery elm, aloe vera, Evening primrose oil

Yoga poses that will help:

•Spinal twists


•Standing forward bend
