Holistic Health: Recovering from and Preventing Kidney Stones


One of the most crucial organs in your body is the kidneys.

This is because the kidneys enable your body to detox, get rid of impurities from our blood stream and eliminate waste products from your urine

This article was written for a woman who was just hospitalized for her first kidney stones and wanted to know what to eat and what to avoid to prevent future kidney stones.

Kidney stones!

3 types of kidney stones:
•Uric acid stones (caused by high protein diet)

•Calcium stones (90% of kidney stones)

•Struvite (usually occur after UTI- made of ammonia)

Basically they are a crystallization of chemicals and minerals in urine. REALLY painful.

Usually happens to people who live sedentary lives, eat spicy foods, don’t drink enough water, and wait too long to pee.

When you put off peeing, your body builds up toxins: DON’T WAIT!


Important Tips:
•No more than 1,500 mg of salt (1 tsp)

•No more than 2 servings of meat per day (less than 6-8 oz each)

•Take a quick walk after eating


•Spicy foods

•Milk products

•Processed, refined foods

•Foods rich and heavy in fat and protein

•Foods with added vitamin d


•Pickles and cucumbers

•Foods high in oxalic acid: rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, milk chocolate, nuts, beets


Eat less:
•Green leafy veggies (they have too much calcium. But, you can eat with barley to neutralize the acid.)

•Meat, fish, poultry

•Sugar (actually causes the body to excrete calcium in order to neutralize it)

•Bubbles (sodas) and alcohol

Make Sure To Drink:
•Apple juice

•Pomegranate juice

•**About 14 cups of water per day

•Drink a tea made from basil (10-12 leaves, steeped 15 min) add honey

•Lemonade (homemade: lemon juice+water+honey or sugar)

•*Coconut water (relieves any burning)
Eat Lots of:
•Avocado, potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, *celery

•Bananas, cranberries (contain quinic acid which binds with calcium and phosphate to prevent coagulation), 2-3 apples a day, watermelon, grapes

•Barley, oat bran, brown rice, oats, flax seeds

•Dark chocolate (well, not LOTS, but you can treat yourself….)


And also eat foods that dissolve masses and lumps and regulate sodium:



Vitamin B6, magnesium (250-500mg)


Burdock, nettle leaf, dandelion


Yoga poses to help kidney stones:
Camel pose
Stretch arm over head
Knees to chest
Plough pose
Legs up the wall
Jump up and down

Acupressure points:
Under arch of foot
Behind knee
